Reforming the bathroom: better to choose a shower tray or a bathtub?

It is one of the great dilemmas that must be faced when renovating the bathroom. Both shower tray and bathtub have advantages and disadvantages, therefore, it is important to take into account some aspects before deciding on one solution or another.

1. Size of the room

It is, without a doubt, the key factor that should guide the choice. If the bathroom is large, there will be no problem , it can be installed from a freestanding bathtub to an XXL shower. Or it is even possible not to give up any of the two options if there is space.

But, if the room is small, the best choice will always be the shower . For one, it always takes up less space. On the other, it is visually much lighter than the bathtub. And if the room also has an irregular shape or columns, the modern shower trays can be easily cut to fit any space.

2. Who will use the bathroom

It is another important aspect. In a children's bathroom, the bathtub will always be more advisable , more comfortable for the toilet of the little ones. On the contrary, if it is going to be used by the elderly or those with mobility difficulties, the safest option is the shower tray , since access is easier and the risk of falls is much lower.

The problem arises when the bathroom of a rental house is going to be renovated. In this case, it will be necessary to take into account the type of tenants that are preferred: families, students, temporary workers, travelers, etc.

3. Aesthetics

Bathtubs, in addition to being functional, can be very decorative . There is a huge variety of models, free-standing or built-in, that allow you to create an elegant, sophisticated or vintage atmosphere in the bathroom, depending on the tastes or style of the home.

As regards aesthetics, showers, a priori, are not so attractive. However, the possibility of being able to play with the colour, texture or shape of the plate allows for the creation of very modern environments.

4. Savings

We are at a time when it is important to bet on sustainability and saving natural resources and goods as scarce as water. In this sense, there is no doubt: the choice is the shower tray . To get an idea, a 5-minute shower consumes about 100 liters of water, while to fill a bathtub, at least 200 liters are needed.

5. A question of numbers: 2 in 1 or 1+1

It is not necessary for the bathroom to be very large to be able to enjoy both a bathtub and a shower and have that 2 in 1 so functional. If it is long, it is possible to put the bathtub at the bottom and just in front of it a walk-in shower tray. If the bathroom is square, the ideal is to place both elements together.

Are there two bathrooms in the house? In this case, the perfect solution is 1+1, that is, a shower in one of them (the smallest) and a bathtub in the other.

The choice between a shower tray or a bathtub should not be taken lightly. The essential thing is to analyze the needs and take into account the space available. In this last aspect, it is also important to assess another aspect: before renovating the bathroom, it is convenient to analyze if its current distribution is the best, since sometimes precious space can be gained by changing the toilets.
